Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll

On Sunday, October 16, we had the opportunity to participate in the Maple Hill Cemetery Stroll.  This is an annual event held in the month of October by the Huntsville Pilgrimage Association.  Maple Hill Cemetery was established in 1818 when the city of Huntsville purchased two acres of land from Leroy Pope.  Maple Hill Cemetery now extends almost 100 acres and houses the graves of many historic and political figures.  Located in the heart of downtown Huntsville, it includes more than 80,000 graves.  The Pilgrimage Association has assumed the maintenance and restoration for Maple Hill Cemetery's grave markers, monuments and landscape.

The event lasted for 2 1/2 hours and showcased (77) presenters dressed in period clothing.  You couldn't help but be drawn in by the fascinating stories of these individuals and how they lived their lives.  There wasn't nearly enough time to begin to see and hear all (77), so you can bet we will be there again next year and the year after until we have heard them all.

It was a beautiful day a little warmer than the one before, but the shade of the large Oak trees kept it pleasant.  We walked among the paths to the sound of the Confederate band, which played in different locations throughout the cemetery.

It was definitely like taking a walk through time, and a great way to learn more about the history and people who made  Alabama, Huntsville and the surrounding areas what it is today!  So, if you are ever in this area in the month of October be sure to add this to your things to do list, you won't be disappointed!
