NHRA Mid West Nationals

The first weekend in May, my husband and I loaded up the truck and headed to the races. It was the NHRA O'Reilly Midwest Nationals, which were being held in St. Louis, and we had tickets for Saturday. When we left on Friday it was raining and it appeared we may be rained out, but awoke on Saturday to clear skies and 50 degrees. We were up and out before 0730 to grab our tickets from will call and to hit the gates when they opened at 0800. We were both new to the "racing" circuit, so we weren't quite sure what to expect, after all, we are both from the "House of the Mouse" and are use to large crowds at opening time! We were in for a full day of racing, as all of the Friday night qualifying events were rained out, so they were making up for lost time by running the events on Saturday. Our seats were great as we were positioned right on the starting line. The run down for the days events were as follows:

  1. Pro Stock qualifying session - pro stock motorcycle/car
  2. Nitro qualifying session ( Top Fuel Dragsters and Funny Cars)
  3. Pro Mod qualifying session
  4. Competition eliminator
  5. Sportsman eliminations

Little did we know we would spend close to 11 hours perched upon aluminium stands. Of course you know my husband took plenty of "food" breaks to sample all the carnival treats, but that is an entirely separate photo show.

It was really neat being up front to actually see the dragsters in action. Of course the event was being covered by ESPN2, and we managed to catch a few of the highlights from our day at the park on Sunday morning. We had a blast, and it is definitely something we will do again in the future....look out Bristol here we come!
