Ok, so evidently a co-worker caught me in a weak moment and I agreed to try out a kick boxing class at our local YMCA tonight. "How hard will the class be?" I asked, to which she responded "Oh, it will be easy and just remember you can modify any move you want." I should have known this would mean trouble as this is the same line I used on her when talking her into attending a Zumba class with me.
So, into my sporty attire I went and off to the YMCA I drove. Upon arriving they were already in "full" warm-up mode. I jumped right in nothing to difficult here a little stretching a few lunges and a squat thrown in for good measure. I said to myself "Self, you can do this...piece of cake." At least that is what they want you to think right before they ratchet up the music and kick the moves into over drive.
Now keep in mind our instructor was pint size at best, but she reminded me of Tigger from Winnie the Pooh, as I was convinced she had springs on the bottom of her feet. We began with a few punching moves here a jab...there a jab...everywhere a jab..jab! Then a siren went off and the race was on.
We were jumping and kicking, grunting and groaning ( ok, I was the one who was mostly groaning). We did mock jump rope, bag punches, tire runs, front kicks, side kicks, you get the picture. Just when I thought I might be getting a handle on the moves the music would change and so would the step. I swear we had a music/move change every 2-3 minutes. It was like I was being taught kick boxing by a ADHD kangaroo!
All in all I thought I did pretty well, managed to hold my own with very little modification. Upon making it home and attempting to get out of my car I realized on my right leg, I had no feeling from my knee down. In addition, I felt like I had been sucker punched in my abs. Not a good sign I am thinking, as it had been less than 30 minutes since the class ended.
So I think it is safe to say Muhammad Ali I am not, but hopefully with a little practice and a lot of Icy Hot and Tylenol I will be able to return and give it another shot.
